Combined, they accounted for 4,498 academic publications and 92,674 citations in the EduRank data used for the 2026 rankings.

This performance represents a significant milestone for Visayas higher education, establishing the region as one of the country’s strongest academic areas outside the traditional Manila-based university system.

University of San Carlos Leads Regional Pack

Leading the Visayas group is the University of San Carlos, which posted the strongest research footprint among the four institutions. EduRank attributes 1,535 publications and 51,330 citations to USC across 79 research areas.

The Cebu-based university continues to strengthen its institutional standing with CHED Autonomous Status and recognition for 8 Centers of Excellence and 12 Centers of Development, reflecting the depth of its academic programs.

USC has also gained international visibility, placing 6th in the Philippines, tied for 94th in Southeast Asia, and tied for 507th overall in the QS World University Rankings: Asia 2026, according to the university’s official announcement.

Silliman University Maintains Historic Excellence

Silliman University, based in Dumaguete City, followed closely at 10th nationwide. EduRank attributes 495 publications and 14,255 citations to Silliman across 38 research topics.

The university remains one of the most historically significant higher education institutions in the country, having been recognized as a National Historical Landmark by the National Historical Commission of the Philippines.

In 2025, Silliman led the CHED-NIR Regional Quality Awards with distinctions in research, community extension, internationalization, board performance, peace education, and student affairs. QS currently lists Silliman University at 694th in the Asian University Rankings 2026.

UP Visayas Strengthens Specialized Fields

The University of the Philippines Visayas, ranked 14th nationally, reinforces the Visayas’ strength in specialized academic fields. The university has positioned itself as the country’s center of fisheries education, research, and extension, with its College of Fisheries and Ocean Sciences widely recognized for leadership in marine sciences.

EduRank attributes 1,165 publications and 14,068 citations to UP Visayas across 57 research areas, underlining its research relevance and academic output in specialized fields.

The university’s distinction extends through its alumni, including Dr. Junemie Hazel Lebata-Ramos, who was named the Professional Regulation Commission’s Most Outstanding Professional of the Year in the Field of Fisheries in 2024.

Visayas State University Completes Top Four

Completing the regional “Big 4” is Visayas State University, which ranked 19th nationwide in EduRank’s 2026 rankings. VSU posted 1,303 publications and 13,021 citations across 66 research topics.

Known for its strength in agriculture and allied fields, VSU has steadily built a profile in instruction, research, sustainability and international benchmarking. The university describes itself as a leading global university in agriculture and allied fields.

VSU reported its inclusion in the 2026 QS rankings, marking a milestone for Eastern Visayas higher education. In the 2024 UI GreenMetric rankings, it placed 898th globally while ranking first in the Philippines and fifth worldwide in the Education and Research category.

Research Output Demonstrates Academic Depth

The combined research output of the four universities demonstrates the breadth of academic excellence across the Visayas region. USC leads with 1,535 publications across 79 research areas, followed by VSU with 1,303 publications across 66 areas, UP Visayas with 1,165 publications across 57 areas, and Silliman with 495 publications across 38 research topics.

The citation impact varies significantly, with USC generating 51,330 citations, Silliman contributing 14,255, UP Visayas adding 14,068, and VSU contributing 13,021 citations to the academic literature.

Regional Academic Identity Takes Shape

The performance of USC, Silliman, UP Visayas, and VSU reflects the depth and diversity of higher education excellence throughout the Visayas region. USC brings scale, research output, and broad academic strength across multiple disciplines. Silliman combines scholarly standing with institutional heritage and prestige.

UP Visayas anchors the region’s expertise in fisheries and marine science, while VSU strengthens credentials in agriculture, sustainability, and applied research. Together, these institutions represent different but complementary approaches to higher education excellence.

National Higher Education Landscape Shifts

The 2026 results demonstrate that the Visayas has emerged as one of the country’s strongest academic regions. With four universities inside the national top 20, the region is not only keeping pace with the country’s leading institutions but actively shaping the future of Philippine higher education.

The regional performance suggests a continued decentralization of academic excellence away from traditional Manila-centered higher education, with Visayas institutions contributing significantly to research, innovation, and public impact across multiple fields of study.

This milestone represents more than just ranking achievement, indicating the maturation of regional higher education systems and their growing contribution to national academic competitiveness and research output.
